I don't know that you can turn them "off" but you can "hide" the ticker by clicking on the " < " on the left bottom by the ticker {nm} Flash Feb 06, 08:39

it can also be done by checking the box under account settings. Also, using ad block/element hiding with Firefox, one can block indiviidual islander Feb 06, 12:22
