Can someone explain the taxes or surcharges on buying and selling

I bought some stocks and checked my completed trades to see the cost was about $50,000 more than what it should have been (num_shares x cost of share), so it appears there is some small tax paid for the privilege.

Likewise on the cover of some shorts, I payed $200,000 more to cover the shorts than expected (cost of cover x number of shares). I've not seen anything that mentions taxes or surcharges on the purchases, can someone elaborate or point me in the direction of a knowledge base article explaining it all? Thanks.
