The Smurfs cartoon has been in regular rotation on Boomerang for awhile

whereas the only exposure kids had to Alvin and the Chipmunks on television before the movie was a couple of made for tv animated movies running on Disney's various channels.

Competition from Cars or HPOT probably won't be an issue that far out either.

Personally, I hate the marketing.

The 1st commercials came off to me like a bunch of in-jokes and some pseudo-adult humour using the term smurf. I kissed a Smurf and I liked it....ugh...smurf me up the smurf hole that was bad. I guess they were initially trying to appeal to us 30 year olds that may have watched the hannah-barbara blocks on NBC as kids and assumed little kids will watch anything aimed at them.

Despite my gripe with the early tv spots (last one I saw seemed aimed at kids) I don't see anything obvious why it couldn't be the next Alvin.
