The vast majority of Jacksonians I know that saw it where white -

I'd say the two reasons it did well in my hometown of Jackson are:

1.  Many people in this area played extras - folks wanted to see friends and family in a movie.

2.  Older people remember the time period the movie touches on - many had extreme nolstagia reasons to see it.  I know folks that haven't been to movies in ten years that wanted to see this film for that very reason.  They made their sons and daughters take them.

great article on The Help and it's potential - Variety lobogotti Aug 15, 07:31

I almost posted this but was worried about being called a hypocrite. TheWeekendWarrior Aug 15, 07:32

LMAO....I was waiting for it. In all seriousness this has to encourage you on the delist numbers. Throw in that holiday weekend lobogotti Aug 15, 07:34

Must be many that think like you and me there Lobo. Dorfman Aug 15, 07:37

well if those were the top markets, it sounds like the ethnicity was heavy African american {nm} Moviesnob Aug 15, 07:39

in Memphis, Hotlanta and Jackson definitely. Dallas, Chicago are debatable. {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 07:42

it would interesting to line this up to a Tyler Perry release {nm} Moviesnob Aug 15, 07:45

it would, but the reason I question that is there is no way I'm going to a Perry film. the fact that I went with wifey, it was near sold lobogotti Aug 15, 07:49

OK there is only 1 thing this movie has in common with a tyler perry release... Thats a really bad comparison {nm} Dorfman Aug 15, 08:00

that it overpeforms in Atlanta? That its demo is older? That it skews female? That it opened above 20? {nm} Moviesnob Aug 15, 08:02

Tyler's demo is older? Most people I know that like his movie are younger. Dorfman Aug 15, 08:13

I don't know what his movies pull now, but I remember the first one's opening w/e being something like 60% 35+ African-American females. BionicMoron Aug 15, 08:17

yes, older {nm} Moviesnob Aug 15, 08:18

That it makes grown white men cry fairly hard? BionicMoron Aug 15, 08:05

now that is funny! {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 08:08

hahaha {nm} Dorfman Aug 15, 08:11

... and I can't spell on mondays, it seems... {nm} EverRaven Aug 15, 08:51

to those that were at the film, mind sharing the ethnicity makeup of your theatre? {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 07:46

Watched in Redwood City CA (in the bay area); I'd say 85% white? a few Asians; Mostly older crowd; about 60% females {nm} xiayun Aug 15, 09:12

thanks. what capacity, near sold out? {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 10:01

Yeah, basically sold out except for some front seats; it's a 3:35pm show {nm} xiayun Aug 15, 10:55
