Personally it depends on whether I get emotionally involved with the protagonists or not as to either. Fireproof, I cried when he apologized and got reconciled (good thing). Dark Knight, I cried when Maggie Gyllenhaal's character died (bad thing). I think the music has a lot to do with it as well, as Gary said.
