Perhaps Sunday openers should adjust on the basis of the following weekend: Previous BO (Sun-Thurs) + 2.7 * Fri-2nd Sunday.
I think the 3.0 multiplier is usually used for wide-release non-holiday opening weekends where there is a signifcant platform release. This isn't that situation, but it would seem better to me than using a 9.6 multiplier for a "one-day" opening, which, as you've been noting, creates a real problem for both a halt and an adjust. In theory, I suppose there might be a NF estimate for Sunday before the film opens. :)
