I thought Rango was beautiful thought the story was lacking in some areas. Especially with the reveal of Vegas and Eastwood
Kung Fu Panda 2 I thought had a great story about the accepting who you are and coming to terms with tragedies of the past. It was a great movie about family and I found it to be a good amount of fun. I hope this wins but since the academy snubs most sequels (except Toy Story) in this category I am not holding too much hope.
Rio and Puss in Boots were both a lot of fun and full of laughs. Maybe not what the academy is looking for in an animated movie but they were great flicks to watch and cheer you up. Which is what I am looking for in most animated movies.
Tin Tin was fun but motion capture is still too new and too widely used to have found a spot as a contestent in a particular field. Even people not in the academy aren't sure what they want it to be, On one hand people want Serkis nominated for best actor performance as a mocap artist for Rise of the Planet of the ApesĀ and on the other they want Tin-Tin to be nominated for best animated film. Its a growing problem as more movies are using fully digital characters and animation and live action are melding closer and cloaer. I feel that is the real take away from the nominations not that the animated films this year were lacking just because Pixar didn't make a great one.
Though alot of the other animated fare that came out this year failed to hit the mark. Including Gnomeo, Mars Needs Moms and several of the smaller studio attempts. There was no surprise hit like Dispicable Me this year.
