My wife and I talked recently about how we think Harry Potter is partly responsible for the success of the Twilight and Hunger Games series

On the surface that sounds like an odd statement but the Harry Potter novels turned a lot of kids into lifetime recreational readers. These kids got older and moved on to other things to read including the Twilight and Hunger Games. In short recreational reading has become cool with teenagers. That's a good thing in my opinion.

I read the first book this week and I can see how perfect the story is for movies Jane_Citizen Mar 01, 13:07

LAT's take, says that it could come close to or surpass 100. Paul2k Mar 01, 13:19

MTV provides a little perspective on the tracking numbers while EW throws in its own guess of 80-100. Paul2k Mar 01, 13:21

"and if it makes 101 million does that mean THR will say TOLDJA?" {nm} mickpix Mar 01, 13:41

My wife and I talked recently about how we think Harry Potter is partly responsible for the success of the Twilight and Hunger Games series mrbeankc Mar 01, 13:48

So what's next? The Hardy Boys franchise comes to the silver screen? :P {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 13:50

Too old, that's what their parents read. {nm} Antibody Mar 01, 13:52

The Hardy Toddlers then :P {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 13:52

I meant the books are too old. The next big series hasn't been written yet. {nm} Antibody Mar 01, 13:53

I knew what you meant, was just being cheeky lol. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 13:53

Although if OMARS becomes a hit, then maybe the Hardy Boys isn't "too old"... {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 13:55

Today's teens haven't read OMARS so not the right comparison. {nm} Antibody Mar 01, 13:55

Then maybe I should say: If OMARS becomes a hit, then maybe Agatha Christie novels aren't "too old"? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 13:58

Is it too soon for Murder She Wrote big screen treatment? Matlock? {nm} tribality Mar 01, 14:00

I think it's never too soon for those, but that's just me. ;) {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 14:06

I haven't been a teen in nearly 20 years and I have not read OMARS {nm} tribality Mar 01, 14:00

One could argue for EGAME, but most of that series' fanbase is Gen X. {nm} Antibody Mar 01, 13:58

But only EGAME and the (2nd series) Bean novels have any action whatsoever. The Ender sequel novels were slow, thoughtful books. {nm} BSmurf Mar 01, 14:22

The Three Investigators next please :) {nm} tealfan Mar 01, 16:57

The Berenstein Bears! :P {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 17:02

Indeed, Twilight owes a lot of its succes to Potter, IMHO, because... GalacticPothealer Mar 01, 13:53

It was often said that the Potter series was turning a generation of kids into lifetime readers. I think with the success of the.. mrbeankc Mar 01, 14:12

Still not too late to buy Lionsgate stock... Hunger Games will have huge impact, along with Sheen's Anger Management {nm} Hasnerhoff Mar 01, 14:29

So are you saying that I should buy stock in the movie? Will it make me a lot of money, cause it's pretty expensive. {nm} NewBie Mar 01, 19:35

You cheeky little... :P {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Mar 01, 20:33

Man, I pull ate there? {nm} PVL Admin Mar 01, 22:50
