Hey Tanker, thanks for being pleasant and thoughtful in the debate. Here's my closing remarks...

Posted by: numbersix_99 on Jul 20, 06:52 in response to Tanker's post And again, the cities which have banned guns...

You could argue that cities with handgun bans still have high crime rates due to the ease of getting them outside cities. Ban them from the entire country and its a different case.

You say that banning guns will disarm the innocent and those trying to protect themselves. But it also limits the usage and possession for criminals. If you look at countries that ban the laws there is a very low level of gun robberies on a personal level (street mugging, house robbery), and instead they are used from gang warfare. Criminals can still get guns but they are not utilised in the same way.You don't see people in the UK fearing for their lives any more than in the US.

Of course, practically it would be almost impossible to achieve this in the US, due to the size of the nation and due to the constitution and the mentality associated with this.

Again, though, thanks for debating this. We may not be able to change each others' minds but at least we didn't get petty. Peace!

Indeed. It's getting increasingly bad: At least 14 confirmed deaths now, around 50 wounded, at least three of those in critical condition. A Facto Jul 20, 02:35

That's a horrible thing to say. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 20, 03:30

this is such a tragedy...i dont understand why you in America are allowed to use and buy weapons {nm} MatthiasVGer Jul 20, 02:59

Seriously? The d-bags are going to get guns anyway. It is nice to have one to defend yourself and this is coming from a hawkfanatic2 Jul 20, 03:34

A poor argument, predicated on fear as opposed to truth. Just look at the stats for countries with strict gun laws {nm} numbersix_99 Jul 20, 03:36

Look at the cities in America with strict gun control laws, they have the highest crime rates. {nm} Tanker Jul 20, 03:41

How strict? What are the laws? The fact that they are accessible is still the problem {nm} numbersix_99 Jul 20, 04:20

Sadly, criminals do not obey the law. Look at the gun laws in Chicago and the violence, look at D.C. and look at the violence. Tanker Jul 20, 04:33

Agreed, but if you outlaw the ownership of all semi-automatic weapons in the nation, you will see a reduction in gun-related murders {nm} numbersix_99 Jul 20, 04:54

Then criminals will get revolvers and then the cry will be to outlaw revolvers. Tanker Jul 20, 05:37

Handguns too. Basically limit everything besides hunting rifles and only those with extreme monitoring... numbersix_99 Jul 20, 05:51

Like I said below, you have have freedom or you can have security. Nothing will stop crazy people from doing crazy things. Tanker Jul 20, 06:00

Freedom is a device of rhetoric. By that logic every law reduces your "freedom". It's in your constitution but should it be? numbersix_99 Jul 20, 06:06

I've used my handgun to defend myself from a would-be robber. I've never used it to kill. Tanker Jul 20, 06:15

What I meant is that banning guns would reduce gun-related homicides, for criminals and citizens. That alone is worth it {nm} numbersix_99 Jul 20, 06:27

how could you ever ban guns? what govt agency could go across the entire US checking every single person? think about it islander Jul 20, 06:32

And again, the cities which have banned guns (semi-automatic, revolver, whatever) have the highest amount of gun violence in America. Tanker Jul 20, 06:35

Hey Tanker, thanks for being pleasant and thoughtful in the debate. Here's my closing remarks... numbersix_99 Jul 20, 06:52

Revolvers are a heck of a lot less dangerous than a semi-automatic. If the guy who shot Gabby Giffords... photochick814 Jul 20, 08:52

So you think people should be able to carry their guns around with them wherever, just in case? Jane_Citizen Jul 20, 05:26

It's part of the Constitution. Don't like it? There are other places to live. {nm} Mr. Smitherz Jul 20, 08:53

There are thousands laws to control the purchase and ownership of guns. Problem is, criminals don't obey the law. {nm} Tanker Jul 20, 03:37

its only natural that a lot of people will find movie going to be in bad taste this weekend {nm} 1bloke Jul 20, 03:40

And there will be others who will find moviegoing as an act of defiance against the gunman too. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 20, 03:43

The Aussie seems to flat out get the American psyche. As for the shooter- may he rot in hell. {nm} Dales Jul 20, 04:09

Yeah, at the risk of getting too political, you can't let these types of madmen change the way you live your life, they're always going to LanceStorm22 Jul 20, 04:22

You can have eitehr freedom or security. Pick one. And BTW, there are reports that an explosive device was found in the theater. Tanker Jul 20, 04:28

Every system, every facet of life has abberations. Trying to legislate them out of existence equals loss of freedom. {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Jul 20, 03:44

Very true, and very well said. I agree. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jul 20, 03:45

But where possible people should be free from the threat of violence. Jane_Citizen Jul 20, 05:44

Bomb-making instructions can easily be found online. bombs would kill just as many. {nm} Mr. Smitherz Jul 20, 09:17

Someone always has to spoil the party. Apparently, the sicko was wearing a "Bane styled" mask. Frankly, it doesn't surprise me. elchan Jul 20, 05:37

They should stop making these kind of comic book movies. Dark, violent, sadistic. Don't ever see this happening at Spider-Man. {nm} Mr. Smitherz Jul 20, 09:10
