The box office potential of musicals
Posted by: LanceStorm22 on Dec 26, 07:51
I know there's a lot of talk about how les Mis will do after its big opening day, but I think this could be one that could surprise even more, because we've simply never seen a widely known musical get a wide opening. Looking at the top musicals of the past 10 years or so, we have:
Chicago - 170
Mamma Mia - 144
Enchanted - 127
Hairspray - 118
Dreamgirls - 103
Chicago, enchanted, hairspray, and dream girls all got really good reviews but only 1 was pretty well known beforehand.
With this being the third longest running musical of all time, with oscar buzz, and having an actual cast, it could perform better than most would have thought.
