I thought it got off to a great start & the first two big numbers (Jackman's "What Have I Done?" and Hathaway's "I Dreamed a Dream")
completely validate Hooper's live-singing gamble. Both performers know how to use the camera and build their songs so that they conclude with maximum emotional effectiveness.
Then, after 30 minutes, the plot really begins to kick in and you realize...oh crap, it's Les Miz, with all the bombast and waterworks that some of us remember from the stage version. No knock on the performers (most of whom are quite good), but Hooper's other big decision -- to film many of the power ballads close-up in a single take -- doesn't do them any favors. If you begin a song with your tearducts ready to overflow in close-up, there's nowhere else you can go for the rest of the song. And what was left to the imagination onstage -- feces in the Paris sewer, streets awash in blood -- is made literal here and adds to the growing heaviness as the film lurches to its conclusion.
