It's a risk, but the biggest risk facing the studio is that non-Warcraft players will not be interested in the movie
Not many video game movies break out beyond the target audience. Maybe Tomb Raider? Fantasy - of the wizards and orcs type - is a tough sell as well. LOTR and... that's about it. (If you strech the definition of fantasy theres Harry Potter, Narnia etc... but these sre hugely popular childrens' books) Depp will bring in more people than would be turned off - and the studio obviously wants him to create some quirky Jack Sparrow character that will make the film interesting to non-Warcraft players.
I'm not saying this is good from an artistic perspective - but from a money-making franchise-starting perspective, I can see why the studio is chasing Depp.
