I don't have a good answer and haven't looked at the numbers in detail, but the weekend performance was very different from the first movie.
The first movie had $20 million in midnights only, strong Friday matinees and a low IM OF 2.27.
This movie had $25 million in lateshows from 8pm, weaker Friday matinees and a very strong Saturday.
My guess is that families who really wanted to see the movie ASAP, but not at a midnight screening, were brought forward from Friday to Thursday because of the earlier first showing times. This would explain the stronger Thursday evening and weaker Friday matinees. Â While families who saw the first movie on Saturday also went to see this movie on Saturday, which would explain the high IM.
