I thought saying Film District wasnt bought by or is a part Comcast (NBC/Uni) and saying you cant release something under a name you dont

own was pretty clear. You, again, didn't want to admit you were wrong, or didn't undertand, so you kept saying the same over again. This is a common issue, you like to argue, and you like to state your opinion. When its observed thats its factually wrong, you tend to keep fighting or say something like "well regardless" as in "what I'm really trying to say". it is ok to admit when you are wrong or you dont understand.

Not sure what you mean by the MOS nightmare.

How do i know? I know a lot about distribution. I do it for a living. And this is a small town. We all know each other.

In distribution, you buy or produce movies to distribute in the future. You need and want a steady flow of product. You dont plan to go out of business. So when Film District continued to lose money, their source of P&A fudning quit. They were faced with a scenario of finding another source (with their trackrecord, it was going to be hard), or going away (not a great option). At the same time, Comcast was going through their evaluation of their new acquistion and it became obvious that Focus was no longer producing the  same level of success they had in the past and that they really didn't want to be in the business anymore. So they either wanted to shut the label down or sell it off. They came close to selling it off, but the world of releasing arthouse movies has significantly changed and its not a buisness that people really want to get into. The opportunity arouse that Comcast could turn Focus into something more commercial, with new leadership. Thats the option they went with.

Now Comcast couldnt buy FD for a number of reasons. They didnt want to take on their old slate that they could not exploit because most of the rights are tied up with Sony and Netflix. There was no "brand" with Film District. There are very few brands that do mean anything. Focus is an older, previous succesful label that while doesnt mean much to the average consumer (like yourself) it means something in this town. Plus they might have had better output deals and international deals. So no sale, but the leadership worked with the titles on the slate that could get moved over (instant slate!) and those titles could be fully exploited by comcast through their unversal deal (again FD is theatrical only so the other rights go to Sony & Netflix).

See the difference between a "sale" and an "absorbing"?

Y: The poster for Walk of Shame [WOSHM] has Focus World, rather than Focus Features. Trailer tomorrow. Antibody Jan 14, 12:56

nice catch, although i dont know if that means the same thing it used to mean {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 12:58

The other FilmDistrict holdover AWODT got Focus Features. {nm} Antibody Jan 14, 13:02

i wonder if they regret selling off OCULU now {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 13:07

Good poster, but Focus Features has a few mid-range box office movies and per Wiki is still NBC Universal. Focus World... (more) KalElFan Jan 14, 13:43

Since Focus isnt Focus anymore, it might be something more than that, but yes, I was referring to Focus World being digital releases {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 13:49

It's still Focus Features, right? NBC Universal just folded FilmDistrict and some of its execs into it. {nm} KalElFan Jan 14, 14:05

Only in name. The old Focus would never release AWODT or WOSHM. {nm} Antibody Jan 14, 14:06

and 95% of the focus employees were let go {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:09

Is NBCUniversal still releasing under the FilmDistrict label? If not, then it would seem Focus Features is more than twice as big now. {nm} KalElFan Jan 14, 14:14

Film District is gone and was never a part of NBC Uni {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:17

Yes I know. By "still releasing" I meant do they still see value in releasing under the name versus just using Focus Features. {nm} KalElFan Jan 14, 14:20

You can't release through a company or name you dont own. If you could, I would release my movies under Marvel :-) {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:23

Sometimes I think certain people around here are willfully obtuse. I KNOW NBCU JUST BOUGHT FILMDISTRICT. The question was... KalElFan Jan 14, 14:27

OK, I'll be blunt. Film District is gone, shut down, out of existence. Never will be heard from again. It is not, nor has ever been bought Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:34

Here are a few links and quotes.... KalElFan Jan 14, 14:56

I really dont want to go back and forth on this with you. Its always this way with you. I gonna say this one last time. Moviesnob Jan 14, 15:03

No transaction! Got it! NBCU just magically absorbed all things FilmDistrict. Consider this Moviesnob... KalElFan Jan 14, 15:16

well, I will apologize if my attitude offended. I dont know where. I was even playful at one point (thats why i added the :-)) Moviesnob Jan 14, 15:28

Since you asked... KalElFan Jan 14, 19:59

I thought saying Film District wasnt bought by or is a part Comcast (NBC/Uni) and saying you cant release something under a name you dont Moviesnob Jan 14, 21:17

Again... KalElFan Jan 15, 06:40

Focus is now releasing genre films like FilmDistrict, not arthouse like the old Focus. {nm} Antibody Jan 14, 14:19

Well, they released The World's End, $26M domestic box office. So maybe they were broadening before the shakeup? {nm} KalElFan Jan 14, 14:10

That's a legacy from wehn Universal still had Rogue, which released SHAUN and Hot Fuzz. {nm} Antibody Jan 14, 14:15

Well, regardless -- if we've established NBCU isn't using "FilmDistrict" then Focus Features has indeed changed -- it got >2x bigger. {nm} KalElFan Jan 14, 14:23

Focus was significantly more staffed than FD {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:24

Huh? Most of the oFocus employees are gone. They're not making arthouse films. {nm} Antibody Jan 14, 14:25

In 2013, per BoM, FilmDistrict had more than twice the Focus box office... (more including link) ... KalElFan Jan 14, 15:11

you could point to 50 Shades as the beginning of when Comcast was changing things at Focus. {nm} Moviesnob Jan 14, 14:19

"Just in case anyone thought this was one of those crappy art films" {nm} Focus World Jan 14, 13:56

It's not so much that anymore, as much as what if anything "Focus World" signifies now. For example... KalElFan Jan 14, 14:17

most likely a radius style release in a couple hundred theatres at most {nm} notfabio Jan 14, 21:06
