Naked in New York (1993) Eric Stolz, Mary-Louise Parker, Ralph Macchio. This movie is vapid. It had nothing to say. You won't believe all the famous names and faces connected with this empty little train wreck.
Secretary (2002) James Spader, Maggie Gyllenhaal. A recently released mental patient gets a job as a secretary working for a lawyer who has some serious issues of his own. As luck would have it they are the PERFECT pairing of dominant and submissive, and it's not long before they're involved a codependent sadomasochistic office romance. Whoa, Nellie! Trust me, you'll have trouble deciding which of these two wacked-out nut jobs is craziest. Must see viewing.
North by Northwest (1959) Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint. Damn, that Eva Marie Saint is sexy. You can never go wrong with Hitchcock.
Radio Days (1897) Woody Allen. Has similar look and feel to A Christmas Story but is no where near as funny or interesting. I was actually excited about seeing this but was sadly disappointed.
A Face in the Crowd (1957) Andy Griffith, Patrica Neal. Good flick with a message that rings true: the people are idiots who will buy anyone and anything the media feeds them. But at 125 minutes takes way too long to make its point. The beginning and end are great -- the middle I could have done without. "A gui-tar beats a woman every time!" Advice to live by.
The Third Man (1949) Joseph Cotten, Valli, Orson Welles. A classic murder mystery with one of the greatest scores in movie history. It consists of nothing more than a very well-played zither. That's it! And I dare you not to fall in love with this infectious music. By the way, Orson Wells is such a pimp in this movie.
Crime School (1938) Humphrey Bogart and Gale Page. Hollywood's Dead End Kids are sent to reform school.
Max (2002) John Cusack, Noah Taylor. In this fictionalized drama, a wealthy Jewish art dealer befriends a talented artist who is an angry anti-semite: the one and only Adolf Hitler. A disturbing account of how this monster might have been created and how millions of lives could have been saved had Hitler not been such a lazy artist. Cusack and Noah Taylor (Hitler) give very strong performances. Good film.
The Big Empty (2003) Jon Favreau, Joey Lauren Adams. I love mystery, intrigue, and surprise just as much as the next guy, but you can't drag me along for an hour and a half and not explain ANYTHING. (is that why it's called The Big Empty.) At some point things have to make sense and this didn't. So fail. I will admit it was an interesting ride, but for me there was no pay off.
High Sierra (1941) Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart.
Drugstore Cowboy (1989) Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham. Four burn-out junkies rob drug stores and wave guns to fuel their habit.
The Wilby Conspiracy (1974) Sidney Poitier, Michael Caine. Upon his release, a former prisoner is again quickly on the run from the racist apartheid government. Watch this if you want to be pissed-off.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946) James Stewart, Donna Reed. Mandatory movie viewing. If this film doesn't move you, you're obviously dead inside.
Sugar (2004) Sad and disgusting tale of two young drugged-out, gay and bisexual street hustlers in Toronto. I could not relate. There were so many opportunities for me to hurl during this movie. Strong adult themes and imagery to say the least.
