I think 22 Jump Street might have something to do with it

People may say that an R-rated comedy and a PG animated film don't go for the same crowd, but I disagree. An animated film needs 4 quad appeal if it's going to break out past a certain point. The same crowd that drove films like Despicable Me and Monsters U to big totals is the same crowd that would rather see 22 Jump Street over Dragons. Same thing happened with Kung Fu Panda 2.
As someone in the 22 Jump Street demo I can say from first hand experience that young adults were interested in Dragons. They were just more interested in Jump Street. I think Dragons would have played better positioned like Despicable Me 2 over July 4th.

another theory floating around is that they waited too long to do a sequel (4 years) {nm} tealfan Jun 21, 09:12
but then you have Toy Story 3 which came out 10 1/2 years after Toy Story 2 {nm} tealfan Jun 21, 11:42
