Maybe this is the smart move.. All the theatre chains were pulling out. IF they went ahead with 25th release where would it show??
The dumbest thing the hackers did was threaten a 9/11-like attack on movie theaters that were going to show the movie. This got the feds involved in a bigger way. So who's to say that in a few weeks, if the feds investigation goes well that Sony can't reschedule a release?
Because of all this I think more people will want to see the movie. Sure they may do special VOD, but hell I'd release the sucker later
