3d is only a $3-4 dollar bump at most theaters in my area. to answer your question. NOT MUCH. look inside:

2009 - 3d movies that went wide & did not have an "incredible run":
xgames 3d - $1.3mil - dull with a small demographic
battle for terra - $1.6mil - dumb, bad/no wom
jonas bros - $19mil - LOL
movies that did have good run, because they were good or strong wom:
gforce - 119mil
monsters v aliens - 198mil
coraline - $75mil
meatballs - 124mil
ice age - 196mil
up - 293mil
and then there were those that made strong cash w/o reason: bloody valentine, carol, final dest.
the higher cost has little do with the BO prouction. its more about offering something that interests people and offering a moviegoing experience that CANNOT be duplicated at home.
you cant rent or pirate a big screen 3d experience. avatar offered something that created urgency to experience in theaters & exclusivity (must be seen on imax format). now just imagine the numbers titanic would have done had it been in 3d....
not trying to detract from the movie or JCAME, but how much of the incredible run AVATR has had is from higher 3D and IMAX ticket prices? ndmaster Jan 10, 18:53
Does it matter? Supply and demand... People still pay to see it. Doesn't change great WOM {nm} hyper73 Jan 10, 18:57
I think the point is that absolute eyeballs matter more than inflatable dollars. icanc4 Jan 10, 22:55
same as Titanic did relative to ET/Star Wars. and as did Jaws/Star Wars to Gone With The Wind . . . mickpix Jan 10, 19:02
