Movies

Not true, a few months ago everyone said December isn't a good time to open a movie, not that it wouldn't hold well.

Just look at Avatar and Titanic as the most obvious examples of what movies released in December can do...

Although when STAR7 did open well, some people (including myself) questioned how well it would hold. At this point, I don't doubt that it'll pass Avatar's domestic gross, but I do wonder what kind of multiple it'll end up with. I can't see this doing more than 4x, which would normally be a pretty average December multiple for a blockbuster, not that anyone would be disappointed with anything near $1 billion domestically.

DL update: STAR7 - $40M-$40.2M on Monday FabioParme Dec 22, 06:58

ALVN4 - $2.98M, TNEST - $2.5M {nm} FabioParme Dec 22, 07:00

It has begun. {nm} second gary Dec 22, 07:23

That's insane....! Previous Monday record was 27M, on summer AND holiday. {nm} Filmstardust Dec 22, 07:29

Every day from now until Jan 3rd will act like a holiday. Well, except for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. {nm} Inigo75 Dec 22, 07:51

even adjusting for 11 years of inflation, previous record holder Spider-Man 2 could only manage $37M tealfan Dec 22, 09:59

Looking forward to data on multiple viewings.. many of my friends have already done a 2nd or 3rd viewing {nm} andy007 Dec 22, 07:52

Wow. I predicted $250m+ for week 2.. was originally thinking $300 but I went "conservative". MiyazakiFan Dec 22, 08:06

Will this stock ever stop growing so I can sell it and retire already? {nm} DTshakes Dec 22, 08:32

No... The force is too strong with this one. {nm} Quickslver99 Dec 22, 08:37

Fan Boys + Christmas Legs = A Winning Combo! eyescovered Dec 22, 08:43

Plus other studio's threw in their towels beforehand. No competition to speak of {nm} jmt-nl Dec 22, 08:47

Nope, this happens every year. Movies released around this time usually have 3,4,5 or sometimes even a 6.0 delist multiplier. {nm} eyescovered Dec 22, 10:01

Anyone doubt that Avatar's 760.5 domestic record will fall in the New Year? {nm} Dorfman Dec 22, 08:44

If i were Disney i would be putting all Star War films in December... no need for summer {nm} cinebello Dec 22, 09:39

I think the question then becomes would Disney/Fox release Star Wars and Avatar against each other, if not, which one moves to summer {nm} benz0 Dec 22, 09:43

Star Wars has already moved to summer. {nm} Antibody Dec 22, 09:52

in 2017 {nm} Antibody Dec 22, 09:52

Right, but (at least publicly) there's nothing about 2019. Taking a wait and see approach to see how Avatar 2 does first before deciding? benz0 Dec 22, 10:08

The Han Solo movie is opening in late May arfter Avengers 3 in early May. {nm} Antibody Dec 22, 10:20

SW is more than just a movie. December release isnt the best time to maximize all revenue streams {nm} Moviesnob Dec 22, 09:45

Can sell a lot of Christmas toys though. {nm} RamsFan2004 Dec 22, 09:58

not as many as a release prior to Thanksgiving would have had {nm} Moviesnob Dec 22, 10:21

Another 40m overseas as well, $610m worldwide. Already topped MJ2 and Martian MattW Dec 22, 09:46
