Box office success in Scandinavia should hardly matter. Danish "Flame and Citrone" was one of the biggest and most expensive films domestically there ever, yet made only pittances in the US. Norwegian equivalent "Max Manus" didn't even get North American distribution, from what I've gathered - and was also scrubbed in the race for Oscars for best foreign picture. Both those two films received better critics' grades all across the board, than did the filmatization of the Stig Larsson-saga/-trilogy.
