Of course we all have to make a living

Posted by: vindog on Jan 02, 14:09 in response to hyperzeitgeist's post "Business" being the operative word.

If Star Wars and other "pedestrian fare" five us more films like the English Patient and The Last Emperor then what's the issue. Just because filmmaking is an art doesn't exempt it from being a business. And as far as my movie viewing habits until I had children 7 years ago I customarily went to the movies 75 times a year on average for 15 years previous.

A little bit of perspective amidst all the 'Star Wars' hysteria... hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 02:22

I don't see the point. It's been out for a couple of weeks, vs. many years for the others. If those stats are meant to take some shine off edzep - Port Monkey! Jan 02, 06:29

The inflation argument is ignorant. No one adjusts apples revenue for inflation to compare to 1950s corps, and why not judge all variables Fitch3k Jan 02, 06:41

You are the one displaying your ignorance if you believe that inflation isn't relevant... {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 07:04

The point is that people are still watching 'Gone With The Wind'. Do you think that will be true of STAR7 in 75 years? {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 07:06

They're still watching STAR4 42 years later, so probably :) {nm} Chateau_du_Mal_Voisin Jan 02, 07:08

er... 38 years. {nm} Chateau_du_Mal_Voisin Jan 02, 07:09

The thing GWTW & STAR4 have in common is that they are both genuine cultural phenomena. STAR7: Over-hyped retread. {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 07:12

Usually people bring up "The Hidden Fortress" and Flash Gordon serials when assessing the originality of "Star Wars." So. . . second gary Jan 02, 07:33

Who cares? BO success is not determined by movie quality. People wanted Star Wars content, they got it. {nm} slappydavid Jan 02, 07:42

Tell me then what does it matter to Disney what Gone With the Wind was able to make over 70 years? {nm} Fitch3k Jan 02, 07:07

Your argument contains a logical fallacy. {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 07:13

It's also ignorant in not admitting the fundamental changes in our culture that make this statistic interesting but not worth much. goodvibe61 Jan 02, 11:25

We get it, you hate SW, move on. The next decade is going to really suck for you. {nm} skunkrunner Jan 02, 09:57

+1. {nm} Captain Obvious Jan 02, 10:17

Wow! A +1 from the troll...you're really in exalted company. {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 10:23

Please Stop TROLLING. {nm} Captain Obvious Jan 02, 10:37

I see what you did there...very clever /s {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 12:07

Sorry to disappoint you but 'Star Wars' doesn't exist in my universe so it's hardly likely to impact on my decade... {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 10:20

Come back and tell me how much fun you're having after you've been force-fed another half dozen helpings :p {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 10:22

What universe is that? Star Wars is the undisputed Alpha and Omega of modern American cinema. {nm} skunkrunner Jan 02, 10:31

I think you need to get out more :D {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 12:09

Sorry to hear that. If you dont appreciate Star Wars it could be said you really dont appreciate films.nm vindog Jan 02, 10:35

+1. {nm} Captain Obvious Jan 02, 10:41

Yes my point being films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the heart of the business. vindog Jan 02, 11:37

"Business" being the operative word. {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 12:01

Of course we all have to make a living vindog Jan 02, 14:09

I've probably appreciated more films than you've had hot dinners. {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 12:20

if it doesn't exist in your universe, then why are you posting about it? {nm} JDolphin Jan 02, 11:41

Because this is (supposedly) a movie forum on a website devoted to movies that currently seems obsessed with one film? {nm} hyperzeitgeist Jan 02, 12:03

It's as much a box office site as a movie site, and so yes, this forum is obsessed with the movie having the largest box office impact now. {nm} goodvibe61 Jan 02, 12:55

I can appreciate that but as others have pointed out there are other investments that offer a far better ROI, yet they barely get a look in. {nm} hyper_2016YTD Jan 02, 12:59

Just like the real stock market. :D {nm} The Force-Ghost of DTravel Jan 02, 18:33

Then why don't you point those out instead of trying to post misplaced and inaccurate "perspective" {nm} JDolphin Jan 02, 20:37
