More seriously, SHISL has something that appeals to everyone - it looks like a horror film which appeals to teenagers, but it's creepy

horror which doesn't alienate adults. It stars DiCaprio, who appeals to women over 25, and is directed by Scorcese, who appeals to men over 25. That makes it very difficult to counter-program against. Whatever quadrant your film is aimed at, a good section of your target audience will opt to see SHISL, and not your movie, so once SHISL staked out its date
This being a February release is also a factor. Probably the most likely counterprogramming would be a romantic movie or a rom-com. But because it's February, the best time to release these movies is Valentine's weekend, or the weekend before. There's little point in scheduling your romantic movie to open after Valentine's.
A straight-up comedy would probably do OK against SHISL (but there aren't any being released this year) or a movie aimed at kids (which would be competing against PJALT and would get chopped off by ALCNW).
Just curious - anyone got a theory/explanation why [SHISL] is the only wide opener on Feb 19? osmosis2003 Feb 02, 23:15

I think it's just plain luck... I'm sure a lot of movies could open against SHISL without problems. {nm} Phantom Menace Reviewer Feb 03, 06:48
