thinking of Big Hero, I can see why it would get $1.4M. It was geared towards families, but it was also heavily geared towards the superhero crowds (young males).
my hope is that the crowds that came out last night did so solely on looking to see a well reviewed film. because you're going to get the families over the weekend, but to open massive you need a lot of them. other groups can help push this into break-out territory.
that said, it's a wait and see game. it now needs a $18-$19M Friday (not including the $1.7m) to have a decent shot at $70M. anything over that would be gravy.
