just in general, what if any responsibilty does a director have when making a film in finding a balance between pure artistic vision

should van sant have ever made this film; surely he would have known what a hard sell it would be to audiences?

is it more important to allow directors absolute freedom (even if it means the film is unwatchable) or broaden the appeal (and maybe lose some greatness) because ultimately movies have to sell tickets?
