The negative buzz for the Jem & the Holograms reboot was just as bad and it did kill the movie

Posted by: drakkar on May 19, 23:38 in response to lobogotti's post are trolls going to kill Ghostbusters?

The cast of Jem and director Jon Chu have publically blamed the so-called "haters" for ruining the movie.  I, on the other hand, blame them for making a bad movie.  I don't think Ghostbusters will be as bad - Jem had record low opening and opened to mostly completely empty theaters.

Jem had similar problems as Ghostbusters. Massive number of thumbs down for the trailer on YouTube, negative user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, people on Twitter and Facebook bashing the movie.  The Jem Facebook page was nothing but people saying how much they hated the movie months before it came out.  All articles with comments had people trashing the movie. Many people first heard about the Jem movie from articles about the backlash to the trailer. That's similar with Ghostbusters.  And when people see a so-so trailer with the idea in the back of their mind that it's bad, that will influence their opinion of it.

Had the Jem movie been actually someone it's target audience wanted to see, the negative 30/40-year old Jem fans would have been drowned out like the G1 Transformer fans who hate Michael Bay's Transformers. And that's the biggest challenge Ghostbusters has - the trailer just isn't funny and the effects look direct to video quality.

The moral of the story - don't mess with children of the 80s.

Are the dwindling number of people going out to the movies going to kill movie theaters? fricnfractal May 19, 20:37

Mainstream moviegoing audience =! Twitter trolls. UConnHusky May 19, 23:53

I've hated it since I saw that first set pic. The uniforms make them look like janitors. Nothing I've seen since has changed my mind. {nm} hyperzeitgeist May 20, 01:26

Watch Midnight's Edge videos on youtube... if even half of what they reported is true then it's going to be horrible! Plus Baron_Darcon May 20, 03:55

Thanks for the heads up Baron. Those videos offer a more plausible explanation than the tired old 'sexism' meme. {nm} hyperzeitgeist May 20, 04:28

Here's the 3 analysis of GGB. They have screenshots in the video showing the emails, and leaks so you can read for yourself what Baron_Darcon May 20, 05:10

thanks for these {nm} lobogotti May 20, 05:27

The 4chan post says that the studio doesn't want to "play the feminism/misogyny card" because they think it was a factor in MMAX4's RogerMore May 20, 05:38

MMAX4 failing is Max was a blood bag, then muzzled, then forgettable, the action so overthetops it was sad. {nm} Baron_Darcon May 20, 07:37

Sony thinks differently, and they study audience reactions to movies. {nm} RogerMore May 20, 07:45

thats a personal opinion not the studio's. The issue with saying the outrage for ghostbusters is quality/remake related is that it doesnt Moviesnob May 20, 09:20

Maybe it's indicative of how many factors worse this is than the average bad quality (wannabe) franchise film. {nm} hyperzeitgeist May 20, 09:41

...as a matter of interest, what is your opinion of the Midnight's Edge analysis? If it's only half true it does sound like a train wreck. {nm} hyperzeitgeist May 20, 09:44

but that doesn't effectively explain the scale (it equates to the level of quality). You would have to show why the trailers are worse than Moviesnob May 20, 09:52

I've got friends at Sony. I know what they think of the movie. I think the delay on releasing the trailer speaks volumes about their Moviesnob May 20, 09:56

Oh look, square one again {nm} RogerMore May 20, 09:50

Just to expand on the snark, which I admit isn't helpful... RogerMore May 20, 11:45

i see movies 20x worse than FF every week. Granted they arent studio films, but they do exist and they are something {nm} Moviesnob May 20, 13:03

As a huge MM this is the true reason. That was not a MM movie ... {nm} Fitch3k May 20, 09:20

Interestingly, I hated the casting change same as I do with Ghostbusters and Tom Hardy is a man, so.., Fitch3k May 20, 09:22

how was it not a mad max movie? You are aware Miller made all 4 films & the last one got the best reception critically & won several oscars {nm} Moviesnob May 20, 09:26

Citical reception rarely equates to box office. The movies that compete for the Oscar race are often lower grossing, ... Baron_Darcon May 20, 20:31

I loved the movie, but I think the studio overestimated how popular Max is... tealfan May 20, 10:32

The movie isn't going to do what Sony hopes regardless of its quality Used2BeTwitterFamous May 20, 09:44
