I am late to the "Spielberg is done narrative", but LOL and people said the same thing about Ridley Scott. How did that work out?

You can start one for Paul Feig if you feel inspired.

If the movie fails, he'd have one more chance to turn it around before it permanently solidifies as such. Spielberg wasn't done after Indy 4

I think he may ease off the big budget flicks. I don't see much confidence from him with a movie of this scale.

His directing was nondescript? Sheesh. Ok. Yeah, and let me save you the trouble, American Gangster is really, really good.

Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is a masterpiece, so add that to the list.

It seems whenever a mainstream director waivers in propping up ideological apple pies "his career is over," or he or she has. . .

You also don't "nondescript" your way into $630m box office and 92% positive with a fairly difficult drama with a bit of comedy novel.

guess we'll disagree. its a bland, straightforward movie except for the great fx

the forbes article was built on a mountain of BS but I do think BFG is gonna sting a bit for both him and Kennedy

I do think a better question is whether Disney basically dumped it as it was the last film in their Dreamworks deal

This is a good point, think it was always going to be a limited $$ maker, but a fall/winter release would have made a lot more sense

and a smaller budget. Hindsight is fun, but I do get the feeling that things weren't great with him and BV

I wonder if they wanted him to make something more tent pole and safer but he declined.

I think the 2010's are pretty easily explainable and are going to change in a huge way by the time they are up....

but thats my point. if hes doing passion stuff, he'll have to work with budgets under $100m. Doable and nothing wrong with that

Jul 06, 18:07
I agree with you on that point. I'm not going to hand him $100m for a passion project unless I know he is taking on a 4 quad FX known

I wanted to make the point that Spielberg could always fully hop on the populist bandwagon and direct something like James Bond....

Ridley Scott finally sold out, and we're okay w/ it. Lately he's been more ambitious than Spielberg. "Prometheus" over "War Horse" any day.

Another interesting thing is for someone with Spielberg's clout, 7 of last 10 movies have budgets under $65m and the ones over

He's not done. It's just a new reality that a star actor or director can't open a film big on rep alone anymore.
