I certainly cannot myself relate to SSG James (though Renner does a superb job at portraying him). I am not a "service person" but in
real life, my attitude would probably be closer to Mackies's - or Fiennes' . Movies that have the effect of healing a few wounds are fine but they are not worthy of an Oscar per se. In my opinion (for the little it is worth, frankly), within five years, "Hurt Locker" will have been lost in a plethora of (more accurate, more realistic, more sensitive to the regional context) Iraq-US "war" movies.
By the way, I am a fan of at least two other movies directed by Bigelow: Blue Steel and Strange Days. She is really gifted and original: hope she has more upcoming.
