Let's see - what I would cut...

Posted by: TwoMisfits (a.k.a del_SCA_TwoMisfits) on Aug 14, 17:38 in response to lobogotti's post took the gals out for lunch and missed a lot!

Jungle Book 2 - yes, I know, I'll be the only one, but Kipling's 2nd book was not as well-received as book 1, and these "follow up" fairy tales bombed this year, and this sequel is not cheap to make.  Wiki says the production budget alone for #1 was $175M and that will only go up on a sequel (most likely).  Too risky (for me) with too many other options, especially for Disney.

All the live action comedies (Central Intel, Bad Moms, Sausage) until I had a very solid story and reason for existing, so I'd not pursue any til someone brought me a top notch concept.  2nd (and 3rd) comedies also did poorly this year...Ride Along was the best of a very bad performance for this kinda movie...I mean, Zoolander 2, Big Fat Greek 2, Neighbors 2, etc...

Any sequel that made 15% less or more than the previous edition - it shows a dangerous downtick for the series that's unlikely to reverse...I'd check all these, but you gave a lot of them:)...maybe I'll let you see if that elimates any of the ones from 2s-3s.

I'd chuck the whole current DC universe, but that's not fair, so I'll only say it's an easy call to not make Superman 3 - none of the Supermen movies are cheap, nor has the character been well received - going to the well again is too risky with so many other options...I'd also chuck Suicide Squad 2 - better to fold them in and try to make great movies elsewhere (or spin off Harley-only movie as a cheaper option - only need to pay Margot and Jared then) since this one seems to not be hitting it big enough.

And it depends on what I, as a studio, has - Disney has to be more circumspect b/c it has a LOT of huge cost/huge reward movies (boom/bust) which could turn into huge busts or more huge rewards, but they gotta both protect the brand and make the big money w/o getting burned too many times (Pixar and Marvel have built a rep for good movies - they don't wanna lose that with crap, phoned in sequels).  Whereas other studios have less to work with and may both greelight less profitable and less sure sequels, b/c they are the only ones they have.  Dory already got dinged for being so alike, so I would never make Dory 3 until I had a true Pixar worthy story...

So, I've tossed immediately Jungle Book 2, Superman 3, and Suicide 2.  I would not make without something amazing and a real script - Central Intel 2, Bad Moms 2, Sausage Party 2, Dory 3, Ride Along 3.  And I would be careful with 4th editions (not sure Cap can ever beat Civil War or the Purge can beat this year's timing).  In fact, I'd almost never go beyond trilogies unless the brand is so huge it's in the zeitgeist...

And I'm no expert on horror, but they are so cheap to make, as long as they don't "crowd" the market or get too expensive, that follows my 15% decrease rule...once it does that, that's the cut-off...

so Sunday afternoon is probably not the best time to chat about this, but wanted to point out... lobogotti Aug 14, 11:06

Some of those should be left alone... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:34

Methinks the lobo/moviesnob studio would be in business a lot longer than the misfits studio. Moviesnob Aug 14, 11:44

Nah - Suicide Squad cost $325M (if you believe it was only $175M to produce)... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:49

And Batman v Superman cost $400M (with advertising costs included) TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:54

if you include all costs, its more, but it'll have total revenue (after splits) of over a billion {nm} Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:11

Bad Moms, as much as it's profitable, it wasn't as strong a comedy as many expected or hoped. Trying to make a sequel would be foolish. diamondman56 Aug 14, 11:55

That's my point above - some successful movies have nowhere to go as sequels... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:58

Yep... We need a good plan, Stan :-) {nm} jmt-nl Aug 14, 12:03

They don't have to be successful, they just have to be successful enough. eg Neighbors 2, Hangover 3, Night at the Museum 3, Anchorman 2,etc {nm} RogerMore Aug 14, 12:05

+1 {nm} chosenone2oo5 Aug 14, 12:14

will be interesting to see what STX does with that profit. {nm} lobogotti Aug 14, 15:23

Pay back what they lost on hardcore Henry, free state of jones, and whatever that Julia Roberts thing was {nm} djgrimlok Aug 15, 00:09

Follow my studio strategy, it seems:)...wonder if they stay in business:)... TwoMisfits Aug 15, 10:19

Suicide Squad did not cost $325m. You're making that number up. Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:07

Wish I was, but I think Wikipedia is probably right... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:26

then its total costs are actually higher (theres a lot more to life than theatrical). It read as if you were talking about its budget {nm} Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:37

I don't make stuff up, Moviesnob...but you seem to be taking my movie comments more personally TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:33

you are making stuff up. It takes more than 1-2 hits to be successful. More than 50% of your slate is a better gauge. Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:46

1-2 was a euphemism - I'd actually have to crunch numbers to give a "real number" TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:55

And I guess if you count the kid summer movies, I've done Shaun the Sheep and Boxtrolls TwoMisfits Aug 14, 13:04

PS - Do you ever tout your original released films on here...if not, you should (especially if you have a "favorite" one)... {nm} TwoMisfits Aug 14, 13:08

;) {nm} lobogotti Aug 14, 15:21

Let's see - what I would cut... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 17:38

2017 cuts TwoMisfits Aug 14, 17:47

good stuff. I'm trying to think of a game we could do for this topic. kind of like, be the studio to greenlight and scrap films. {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 10:54

I like Seth R, and his movies work for what they are...great producer. I keep saying it, this guy does deliver!...and in an ok way. {nm} Malachi Aug 14, 20:53
