A very, very affecting documentary; the young Amy Windehouse spent her life recording herself and her friends of video, so you get a very good introduction to her as she was before the drugs. The documentary simplifies Winehouse's descent--it was a much more up-and-down path--but not to the point I felt it was dishonest. Some of the people around her are so clearly irresponsible that you want to smack them, but at the same time, Winehouse's role in her own destruction is never glossed over.
But what's best about this documentary is how thoroughly it makes the case for Winehouse as an artist. Her voice somehow sounds even more phenomenal when she's a teenager playing the local activities center. Most impressive of all are her lyrics, which from the very beginning were honest, knowing, inventive and darkly witty. The documentary's main purpose is to show that Amy Winehouse wasn't a "star"--she was a genuine talent who had a lot more to give. Just tragic.
