Disney made The Black Cauldron as an animated feature in 1985 based on a series of books by Lloyd Alexander (The Book Of Three - The Black Cauldron - The Castle Of Lyrr - Taran Wanderer - The High King).
It was announced earlier this year that Disney had aquired rights to all the books to make them live action.
They kinda smooshed the first two books together to make animated The Black Cauldron.
The Black Cauldron:
The series of books have alot of similarities to The Lord Of The Rings series
Taran (think young Frodo) is a 14 year old orphan who lives on a secluded farm with an old wizard (think Gandolf) and a farmer. He is put in charge of the pig who is revealed to be a magic pig that can see the future. One day, the sky turns dark and all the animals are seen running out of the forest. The wizard tries to use the pig to see the future, but the pig gets so scared about what it sees that it escapes and runs away (into the forest). Taran feels like it is his job to get the pig back so he rushes into the forest looking for the pig. Along the way, he meets several characters who decide to travel with him. Gurgi (think Gollum but instead of talking about the ring, Gurgi talks about food), Flewddur Flam (think C3PO) who is a traveling bard who makes great boasts about his adventures, but the strings on his harp break whenever he lies (which is alot), and Eilonwy a girl who is Taran's age who never stops talking. They find out that a major bad evil dude has returned and is preparing to take over the kingdom. There is no time to warn anybody. His soldiers are searching the forest for a lost magic item, The Black Cauldron, that will allow the evil dude to bring his dead soldiers back to life as zombies. Taran and his group must now find the cauldron first and get it back to the wizard who Taran thinks should know how to destroy it. Danger ensues. Hillarity ensues. No romance enues (in the first two books). Three witches show up (I think the witches from Hocus Pocus were based on these books). Harp strings break. The girl never stops talking.
