It explains why more US indie producers are trying to make films with better poteitial in foreign markets.

They know that US indie market is in terrible condition, so they hope to make films that can make most of their budget back via international pre-sales (if not all), while US theatrical sales just becomes an upside.

Imaginarium had already made its budget back before its US release. "Chloe" had also already made its budget back befoe the film's US rights was sold to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group.

BTW, a more extreme example : A $16 million-budget film "Hachi: A Dog Tale" had already grossed $37 million theatrically in foreign markets.Ā  But Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group (which has this film 's US rights) sends this film to go straight-to-video in US.

Deadline: Apparition Lands Welcome To The Rileys [WRILY]. Antibody Mar 12, 16:04

So basically, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group buys another interesting indie film that no other major distributors wanted to buy {nm} Peterlee Mar 12, 16:57

I don't means that the film would bomb at box office. (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS does respectfully business in US arthouse market) {nm} Peterlee Mar 12, 17:04

Imaginarium was intended to be a wide release, due to starpower.. {nm} Facto Mar 12, 17:46

I just lost a vast amount of text in the IM here - an IM that somehow got lost while publishing. How is this possible?!? Facto Mar 12, 17:51

I'll try to repost the cut/paste from BOM, just to see whether the same thing happens over again {nm} Facto Mar 12, 17:54

It did indeed happen again... Trying it once more, and without attempting to hyperlink from it, this time {nm} Facto Mar 12, 17:55

Ok, so, I don't know what to make of this, but including a copy/paste from BOM can mean the entire IM gets scrapped then. Odd. {nm} Facto Mar 12, 17:56

SPWAG paid very little money to acquire this film. And SPC didn't intend to give this film a huge wide release Peterlee Mar 12, 18:01

Please note that the message you just replied to lost a large IM after I pressed enter to publish :-) Facto Mar 12, 18:04

this is a bit different. Apparition will be more committed to the theatrical than if Sony acquired on their own. {nm} Moviesnob Mar 12, 17:06

You means that Apparition co-buys this film with SPWAG, not only Sony acquired on their own? Peterlee Mar 12, 17:18
