I guess it can be argued that the theater didn't do the work, they just show it?...but man, tickets & concessions are pricey already! {nm}

WSJ: Disney will receive 65% of ticket revenue from STAR8, a new high for a Hollywood studio. Antibody Nov 01, 13:19

keeping 35% of star wars probably going to be better than keeping 100% of anything else {nm} islndr Nov 01, 13:23

I doubt the strongarming will please theaters but what are they going to do about it? Kinda hard to fight back when its Star Wars. {nm} RollingThunder Nov 01, 13:23

cut screens and showtimes to squeeze supply {nm} slipping jimmy Nov 01, 13:26

Just means customers will go to the theater that DOES have showings, and buy concessions there, too. {nm} BSmurf Nov 01, 14:14

in some markets maybe. in others, there may only be one game in town. TFA was running basically 24/7 on opening weekend in many houses slipping jimmy Nov 01, 14:16

The smaller markets with few theaters would be cutting their own throats (pocketbooks) by trimming showings or forgoing altogether BSmurf Nov 01, 14:19

Pretty cruddy of Disney. They are a business, sure, but such tactics are not consistent with their publically accepted image. {nm} RollingThunder Nov 01, 14:22

I agree it's cruddy, and hurting those who actually HELP them the most (theater owners)! {nm} BSmurf Nov 01, 15:30

I know I know. But consider distributors pay for all distribution costs and all promotion to put butts in the seats Moviesnob Nov 01, 15:40

Slightly off topic, but were theaters making money hand over fist before the Internet Age of devices and streaming? BSmurf Nov 01, 16:17

the split has always been the split but the window was typically longer. Star Wars ran for a year straight in some big city theaters in '77. slipping jimmy Nov 01, 16:23

thats what I mean with saying they have less leverage. Other revenue streams are significant Moviesnob Nov 01, 16:41

I must have seen Star Wars 25 times that year. DTXbro Nov 02, 07:02

its their content and they should be maximizing its value. I would argue that a robust theatrical experience Moviesnob Nov 01, 16:45

countrerargument: if the studios were really better at content, more movies would run a lot longer in theaters b/c more people would watch slipping jimmy Nov 01, 17:05

Increased marketing and expansion of multiplexes has pushed demand into first weekend Moviesnob Nov 01, 17:47

65% but what is considered the ticket price? Surely they won't take more off IMAX/Dolby right? Smoo Nov 01, 14:43

The national average ticket price is typically below inflation. Now, as far as concessions...that is to counterbalance the cost of renting Catzan Nov 01, 19:45
