Serious response inside (comment system willing) . . .

Posted by: DTXbro (a.k.a SenJohnBlutarsky) on Jan 23, 16:28 in response to Moviesnob's post are we going to have a serious conversation or is this...

Perhaps for people whose childhood was not spent in poverty and dysfunction, there may be an educational (beyond the voyeuristic) element to a work such as Roma.  My childhood home (until the day of my high school graduation, when I left and never went back) was infused by backwardness and bigotry, however, so I am familiar with the limiting, dispiriting, no-cushion circumstances poverty generally involves and precipitates. But many of the characters in Roma weren't poor. They were pampered and selfish. Their problems were largely self-inflicted, superficial, or both.

The servants, less blameless consequent to being born to poor station, nevertheless were hard to see as heroic or even intereseting.  They seemed to do little to nothing to improve their position.  They made depressingly bad choices.  Their prospects seemed poor and they made no apparent effort to help themselves or anyone else except in the most mundane ways. There was little inspiring or heroic about them.

If this was a loving depiction of Mexico City, that is quite the indictment of Mexico City.  It seemed dysfunctional, backward, stifling, and uninspiring.

I looked forward to Roma.  I was disappointed.  It was a waste of time.

Kris Tapley, AMC is not going to include ROMA in its Best Picture Showcase/Marathons notfabio Jan 22, 10:03

Deadline: Both AMC and Regal are not showing ROMA. AMC says it's because they were never licensed to show ROMA notfabio Jan 22, 10:05

i mean thats technically true but you and i know all they had to do was want to book it and they could {nm} Moviesnob Jan 22, 10:21

Yeah, it's definitely an "easy out" for them, they could have negotiated something over the past few weeks if they were motivated to. notfabio Jan 22, 11:19

all they care about now is academy PR and they dont care about any cost there {nm} Moviesnob Jan 22, 11:53

It doesn't surprise me pquicio Jan 22, 10:31

I haven't seen ROMA but if the Shape of Water can win - anything is possible {nm} jdolphin Jan 22, 10:36

Roma is the good Mexican-directed one {nm} professor zovek Jan 22, 10:53

It was by far the best of the nominated films this year. I have seen some modest backlash on here from a few folks and it is baffling. {nm} MiyazakiFan Jan 22, 11:55

Yeah, I don't understand the comments that it's boring, etc. It's a movie centred on domestic life that still manages to be epic in scope. RogerMore Jan 22, 12:35

it didnt have thanos or the millenium falcon {nm} Moviesnob Jan 22, 13:12

this {nm} CSBD Jan 22, 13:48

i will confess to an occasional thought of "do we really need a shot of *everything* that's happening, Alfonso?" but they all quickly passed {nm} professor zovek Jan 22, 13:42

"Tarantino and feet..." - heh-heh! {nm} CSBD Jan 22, 13:47

Roma was pointless. Not insightful, thrilling, educational, inspirational, or anything else good. Boring, meandering, small depiction of DTXbro Jan 22, 15:18

It's a look at women's lives during a turbulent time. History is not just about men...etc, but also personal Her Stories. {nm} Antibody Jan 22, 15:29

its pretty obvious neo-realism unless you're being willful about disliking it. Any life can be epic, moving and beautiful. Moviesnob Jan 22, 15:47

Who in that movie was admirable, inspiring, heroic, instructive, or even interesting? DTXbro Jan 22, 17:54

are we going to have a serious conversation or is this the animal house character talking? <spoilers> Moviesnob Jan 22, 19:12

Serious response inside. {nm} DTXbro Jan 23, 10:51

Serious response inside (comment system willing) . . . DTXbro Jan 23, 16:28

Not to me. Definitely not by far. It's very well put together, with some excellent set pieces. It definitely has its problems. goodvibe61 Jan 23, 09:55

Good. Why should the theaters bend over backward if Netflix doesn't want to be a team player. Forget them. LaForza Jan 22, 11:14

and i hope the cops catch whoever held the gun to AMC's head and made them run this Best Picture showcase for several years now {nm} professor zovek Jan 22, 11:26

Their business model is counter to going to the movies. Watching a movie on Netflix is akin to watching a sunset from inside your house. Catzan Jan 22, 16:33

I like that...*thumbs up* {nm} tealfan Jan 22, 17:11

yep, well said {nm} Moviesnob Jan 22, 19:19

I would argue sometimes it is best to watch the sunset alone in my house than in a crowded beach with a lot of people making noises. FabioParme Jan 23, 06:24

And the sand! It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. {nm} RogerMore Jan 23, 07:45

from a certain poont of view {nm} tealfan Jan 23, 08:56
