As a long time fan, I think STAR9 is a satisfying send off for the saga, even if the execution is a bit uneven (flow seems off). Still, it definitely hits all the sentimental cords with fans.
Can understand if casual moviegoers don't like it, it's basically not meant for them, and it's unapologetic about that. This applies to movie critics too.
Execution-wise, STAR8 is superior, and the best of the trilogy in that regard. Rian is a much better director than JJ, hope that no one had different expectations about that. It's obvious that JJ taps into the fans' sentimentality in both his movies, and Rian gets a lot of hate for not going that way.
I will continue to look forward to any Star Wars content that comes in the future.
