No -- the reaction is TOWARDS the agenda reflected in the movie

Posted by: shipwreckedcrew on Dec 26, 23:27 in response to RogerMore's post People who have a political or social agenda beyond...

There wasn't nearly the reaction to TFA as there was to TLJ.  TFA created a young female protagonist in the place of the original triology protagonist.  I don't recall that creating any controversy -- it was widely seen as a worthwhile re-setting of the story that gave opportunities to go in different directions.  The lead female characters in the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy were the proverbial "damsels in distress" for the most part, and TFA broke new ground.

TLJ didn't do that -- TLJ reflected a conscious decision that something was "missing" from the first seven films, and that omission must have been intentional and had to be set right.  The world is full of people who look different from the human characters in the original cast from 1977, and TLJ would reflect the world -- whether that change was necessary or not.

You only get to the point that the change is mandated if you believe that George Lucas and those who followed him were misogynistic racists, and cast white Anglo actors purposely to the exclusion of all others.  THAT would need to be "fixed".

Every SW universe movie until RTJ had introduced characters of other ethnicities.

RO had a female lead, a Hispanic second lead, an African-Amercian key character, and two Asian characters in central roles.  The characters were great, the roles were meaningful to the story, and the actors were great in them.

TLJ introduced stupid female characters doing stupid things for no particular reason other than to better make out the "rainbow" of the cast -- and at the same time downplayed the characters who had been introduced into the key roles in TFA.  Rather than "Let's work to develop the characters handed to us, and move the story forward", we get "Hey, you know what we are missing?  A chubby Asian girl.  There are lots of them in the world you know.  Write a part for one."  Box checked.

You'll never convince me that, when cutting the film that the editors didn't, at some point, say to Johnson "Is there really a reason for this character?"

Like M&Ms, once you eat one its hard to stop -- hence TLJ's final product.

i suspected this was always the case but nice to see it empirically confirmed that Russia generated at least 50% of the RiJo/TLJ hate online bedbug eddie Dec 26, 11:07

I posted this study last year when it was released. You're right its nice to see the facts but the manbabies are gonna keep crying {nm} Moviesnob Dec 26, 11:27

Think of it like this - what would the debate over Star Wars would look like without external influence? RogerMore Dec 26, 15:26

SW in general, or RTJ in particular? shipwreckedcrew Dec 26, 16:32

SW since TFA. There has been plenty of messing with SW lore, bad characters and missed opportunities in these movies too RogerMore Dec 26, 17:14

External to what? Has Star Wars never been shown in Russia? {nm} DTravel Dec 26, 17:03

People who have a political or social agenda beyond whether they like or dislike a movie, especially if they don’t care about the movie in RogerMore Dec 26, 17:31

That hasn't been the case with movies ever. Reactions to them have always been colored by the current social hot buttons. DTravel Dec 26, 20:09

I think there’s a distinction between people who want to discuss their reactions to the movie and people who want to blow things out o RogerMore Dec 26, 20:42
