Year end not looking so hot. Box Office Mojo has us 6 percent (under 2018) Only 1.6 percent up (on 2017) and 1.2 percent under (2016):

And all this with "Avengers Endgame" and such setting box office records....

Why this all matters..

Our posters here (like Moviesnob) will claim its all a giant "white supremacy" conspiracy or something (seriously, that gave me the best laugh of the week)..  But here's why it really matters..

Remember the home video market of the early 90's.??  Of course not. Well I do.. those decreases started around the same level (year to year) cause Netflix was creeping in...   In only a few short years -- the home video stores were all gone.

For movie theaters, its Video On Demand, which seems to creep closer with each passing year.   If Studios become convinced theaters aren't worth it anymore -- they'll release films on VOD more and more over the theater window..

Which is the last thing I want... Ever..  I fully belive in the move theater experience...

That is all..  (White Supremacy..  Hahahahaha, thanks for the comedy)...

This is a very different take from your earlier posts about why 2019 box office is down from 2018 RogerMore Dec 27, 08:09

No, it all conincides together. I've been warning about this for awhile... Losing audiences is not healthy for our box office future. {nm} VictorY Dec 27, 08:12

People here have been talking about Netflix and VOD impacting box office for at least a decade, especially the industry insiders RogerMore Dec 27, 08:25

I've been warning about losing audiences. But yes, VOD has been on my mind for awhile now... since 2016 {nm} VictorY Dec 27, 08:42

And always is about his feelings and thoughts. Never about the numbers {nm} L3stat Dec 27, 10:06

2018 was a monster year w/ 3 600m+ movies. Those 3 movies are still in the top 10 all time. Think about that for a minute. How do jamesbik333 Dec 27, 08:22

While I do agree about ups and downs, best we prepare ourselves for 2020. It’s going to be a pretty dreadful year lobogotti Dec 27, 08:42

I'm optimistic.. DC could over-perform and maybe, just maybe we actually start some new franchises.. But I agree, will be tough {nm} VictorY Dec 27, 08:43

optimistic for an increase over 2019? {nm} lobogotti Dec 27, 08:56

Yes. But I agree, it won't be easy. {nm} VictorY Dec 27, 09:01

and In the Heights could steal the summer (it’s going to do VERY well). at this point, it wouldn’t surprise me if it outgrosses Top Gun. {nm} lobogotti Dec 27, 08:50

I like your optimism. +1 {nm} VictorY Dec 27, 09:04

can you connect with me with your new email? {nm} Moviesnob Dec 27, 14:22

I agree 2020 is going to be down a lot. Lots of This is End of cinema articles next year. But 2021 should be a big bounce back year. {nm} jamesbik333 Dec 27, 09:07

Lots of risky blockbusters that year. Obviously it's too soon to really predict how any will play out but: RogerMore Dec 27, 09:47

I think JW3, Batman & Suicide Squad 2 will all do well. Avatar & Matrix I have no idea, lol {nm} jamesbik333 Dec 27, 10:33

Those are the numbers of a stable industry, not one with a worrisome pattern, let alone severe decline {nm} SenJohnBlutarsky Dec 27, 11:35
