Not a theater report. Movie opened yesterday here in Brazil and my kids (5 and 7 years old) were really looking forward to watch it. Theater was about 15% full, which I'd say is normal for a raining Thursday afternoon in Rio de Janeiro.
As for the movie, well, I'm definitely not the target audience. It's silly, childish, predictable, doesn't have a single memorable moment and I hoped Jim Carrey would be funnier as Dr. Robotinik. He has its moments, but most of the time the jokes don't work (for kids or adults) as the script is pretty bad. Carrey is a bit over the top, as expected, but still he is the only think worthy in the movie.
I also had a problem with the CGI. Not talking about the Sonic design, but the special effects in general. Not an expert on it, but the Sonic character fells fake. I have a feeling CGI is getting progressively worse in movies. You can't even compare Sonic to Gollum, which was made two decades ago (even though I know there are two different techniques) and still looks way more real.
Overall, my kids loved it, the audience barely made a sound throughout the movie and I felt this was a wasted opportunity to introduce Sonic to a new generation.
I see the movie is fresh on RT with 64% critic approval. These guys are nuts! If they consider Sonic to be a good movie, then I'm pretty sure I should stick with my TV shows instead of going to the movies.
