I have some sympathy for the theatre chains but their "demands" that movies have to play in theatres first is a bit like

the tail trying to wag the dog.  Or a temper tantrum perhaps.  The theatre chains are (currently) dependant on the studios but the studios are not really dependant on the theatres.  Even with it being under unusual circumstances the example of Trolls 2 shows that.  The studios can make more money working with theatres but they can still make money without them.

There ARE going to be changes in the movie business, business model.  The changes in technology and the wider changes in society that tech changes are a part of both make that inevitable.  The horse buggy whip makers have to learn how to make automobile accessories.

THR: Holy crapola, AMC Theatres business with Universal Pictures has come to an end, for now, will not show any Universal films. notfabio Apr 28, 16:23

They do make it clear they are open to sitting down and negotiating in the future (but.....) notfabio Apr 28, 16:28

when they reopen that AMC Citywalk things are gonna be AWKWARD {nm} Moviesnob Apr 28, 16:34

That's a good point, I would assume this also includes Focus Features titles? {nm} notfabio Apr 28, 16:37

Also wonder what this does to AMC Theatres stock price gains from today. {nm} notfabio Apr 28, 16:38

they have a separate team as you know and Lisa Bunnell is a huge theatrical booster but they dont control their home ent Moviesnob Apr 28, 16:40

Deadline has the Adam Aron's letter in full, the primary sticking point is the plan to continue releasing premium VOD after theatres re-open notfabio Apr 28, 18:22

Uni has a recent history over the last half a dozen years or so of releasing movies direct to vod. Most studies do Moviesnob Apr 28, 19:22

AMC and NATO don't care when Focus World titles or BACKDRAFT 2 go to VOD {nm} Moviesnob Apr 28, 19:24

I think the deal that Netflix tried to do with AMC on THE IRISHMAN (or close to it) might be the middle-ground going forward. notfabio Apr 28, 19:52

I think this is also about film rental. Sure we'll go to 60 days, but we dont want to pay 60%+ anymore {nm} Moviesnob Apr 28, 20:04

“As soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats.” He expected wrong. {nm} SenJohnBlutarsky Apr 28, 18:23

Loving this. Die already, AMC. You and Regal are trash. Let mom and pop as well as true IMAX flourish. {nm} doitdoitdoitnow Apr 28, 23:41
