that Crowe took offense at the reporter suggesting that Crowe had botched his attempt at speaking an *English* accent, and had instead slipped something that sounded more like Irish in there.

So the reporter was probably a bit of a dufus and impertinent, and Crowe had one of his bad days, whatever..
