Chris Pine and Gal Gadot went back for reshoots in June/July of 2019 so definitely something was reshot involving them together.
At the time the inside word was that WB was unhappy with the lack of action (which is STILL an issue with the final release) and why they skipped doing a panel that year for it (since they wouldn't have any big action set pieces to show). BIRDS OF PREY reshoots were also in part to ramp up action.
WW84 from pre-production to release was apparently a nightmare, so the WW3 announcement does seem more than a little to give an added positive spin on everything, PJENK has been fairly candid about her struggles getting it made.
