There've been worse personal jokes at many awards show (hello Ricky Gervais) & its not like Smith himself hasn't done low brow comedy in the past ("what you're going home to your wife for? you got shot in your leg your d*ck don't work no more").
People who get away - like Smith himself who can go on stage & do this because he knows 's too big now to be shunned. Too much money rides on him. He could've made a classy statement later & it would've been Chris Rock's career over instead (which has been on its deathbed for a while anyway).
