Shrek Forever After should be the easy winner again this weekend. I expect Greek to open solidly but didn't see enough signs to have it flirt with $20m. It was the biggest mover on the IMDB buzz meter, however, so a breakout wouldn't surprise me.
Took a bit of a gamble on Killers, although my gut is telling me that it may underwhelm, particularly with sluggish advance sales and a less-than-stellar BOM Poll.
On the other hand, Splice had a decent BOM poll, was the only opener to appear on the Yahoo buzz charts this week (with a moderate score), and had respectable advance sale. At the same time, it was always expected to have the strongest online presence among the openers, so I think low to mid teen millions is a safe bet.
Marmaduke should be the laugher of the weekend. It's generated very little pre-release interest, the tracking discrepancy is alarming, and we didn't sell a single ticket for it in advance. While I certainly don't see it sinking to Hoot levels, I'm thinking Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties numbers here. Someone mentioned to me that even Hotel for Dogs opened to $17m, but it also wasn't competing with Shrek Forever After, which stands to hold well over the weekend.
