Movies

Fatherland; by Pawlikowski starring Sandra Huller; All of a Sudden, by Hamaguchi (Drive My Car); and James Gray's Paper Tiger.

From what I've been seeing, reading, watching online, these are the 3 that the critics at Cannes feel strongly about. There doesn't seem to be enough being thrown around to try and pick an early Palme winner, and there's still alot of film to watch. But Sandra Huller is truly on a roll at this point. And there's plenty of people out there that prefer the kind of slow burn, meditative drama that Hamaguchi plays in.

And then there's James Gray. A Cannes favorite. His movies don't normally click in the US commercial world. Everyone that saw the movie last night say it's probably his best. People are already praising all 3 leads (Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johannson; killer cast). See Jordan Ruimy's summary on his page (trying to stay away from the spoilers for this and a few others).

One more I'm keeping my eye on: is the Sorogoyan film, The Beloved. This guy makes intense, enthralling stories, and I must see this no matter how similar it sounds to Sentimental Value. It's got Javier, and I'm truly keeping this one on the ole radar.

Cannes: 9 of the 22 films in competition for the Palme has screened. Of those, 3 of the 9 seems to have solidly hit. {nm} goodvibe61 May 17, 15:46

Screen Daily only has 2 over a score of 3 and 4 are below a score of 2 but only 2 of the betting favorites has played so far {nm} Moviesnob May 17, 16:11

Favorites not yet screened: Hope (Hong-Jin, the early favorite); Fjord (Mungiu); and Minotaur (Zvyagintsev). {nm} goodvibe61 May 17, 18:01

The other 2 of the top 5 early betting line favorites that've screened: Fatherland and Parallel Tales (Farhadi), which didn't score well. {nm} goodvibe61 May 17, 18:03

Also Hope. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior May 17, 17:34

We're all anxiously awaiting word on Hope. Do you wish you were there Warrior? I know I always do. Like Venice; like Berlin and Telluride. {nm} goodvibe61 May 17, 18:07

I love the movies; i always yearn for it. i'm hoping that, when I have some more time (post retirement) I can do a couple of these. goodvibe61 May 17, 18:09

Lots of positive social media reactions. Nah, I'd rather wait until I can just go see these movies at a screening room. TheWeekendWarrior May 17, 18:09

Crowd control at Cannes is awful {nm} Moviesnob May 17, 19:38

Based on this write up from WOR, I'll be watching it!!! jonjon May 17, 19:09

Wasn't a favorite. Too genre {nm} Moviesnob May 17, 19:19

Well. Hope clearly got the biggest response Sunday night; but it seems to polarizing to have any chance at the Palme. Sure want to see it!! goodvibe61 May 18, 00:31
