All-Star Action Movie Cast which will bring in more audiences even those who are not fan of Stallone. Besides Rocky became Stallone's highest grossing movie since Cliffhanger way back in 93. He had a long list of Flops and some direct to video releases therefore considering all that I would say Nostalgia factor did work for Rocky to a certain extent. Moreover Rocky did open during December so opening weekend comparison to a summer release is not exactly fair.
