...and I would like to see it succeed. I like the idea of listed film stock, and in time I hope there will be numerous films going down this route, not just small budget niche films.
Whether or not you supported the Cantor Exchange concept or philosophy, the episode revealed that there are two distinct sides to film financing - those who have no problem securing it provided they do so through the studio system and those that struggle to get any of it..
A holder of listed stock (that acts as a pure financing) would actually benefit even more from the ability to hedge than debt providers - although the Cantor Exchange concept stalled with the financial reform bill, I hope that in time the calls for new financing methods will lead to a reassessment of the Cantor concept.
All that said, I clicked through to the proposal and can't say I see much prospect for profit in the very niche idea behind "Livingstone - An African Legend". This is where the long term issue will be with these financing concepts - initially they might be a fashionable thing to get involved with (own 'a share in a film') but once that fad tires, over the long term these projects need to ofer a decent opportunity to profit to attract regular and larger investors.
