There's a chance that Ratatouille and Bug's Life were already too far along to completely stop production when similar projects came up, and I think these are different times in that they can be more aware of what's going on at other animation houses as to avoid releasing potentially similar movies that might be compared to movies released earlier. They clearly weren't going to win the race with Rango, another movie starting a lizard, so best thing to do was stop and focus on something else... like a sequel.
