EASY A
Showtime: 7:40 p.m.
Venue: Edwards San Marcos 18 (North San Diego County, CA)
79 butts / 267 seats (30% full)
Snacks: Just water... grabbed a quite bite at Rubios before the movie.
Trailers: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Country Strong, Secretariat, Morning Glory, Burlesque, and a couple more I should remember but don't.
Box Office Potential: Definitely NOT pulling Mean Girls numbers--or even the 20s--unless a disproportionate number of kids decided to go watch high school football tonight. For comparison, She's the Man pulled 106 people opening night at my old (now demolished) theater, with similar demos in the same area. Now, that was only playing on one screen (whereas this is on two), but my theater was hardly a megaplex and didn't do anywhere near this location's volume. So I'd say best case scenario we're looking at 40% better than She's the Man. That puts this at just north of $15m, best case scenario. Maybe this show was an anomaly, but I doubt it. Still a good figure for Sony, but puts the hype in perspective.
Side note: The Town was doing EXCEPTIONAL biz at this site, where I saw Gone Baby Gone with a crowd of less than 50 opening night. Also, looked like Devil sucked up more of the teenie crowd than Easy A.
My Take: Like most of the reviews have said, it’s a total coming out for Emma Stone, who’s hilarious and makes the movie. It’s not entirely original—the Amanda Bynes character is almost a carbon-copy of Mandy Moore in Saved!, for instance—but it’s pretty perceptive and REALLY funny as far as this genre goes. Should generate strong WOM and play for awhile, even if the initial number doesn’t turn out to be the breakout that many had predicted. My review will be posted to BucketReviews.com tomorrow morning.
