What is the genre of "The Tourist," by the way? Is it "crime romance," as the appeals to Hitchcock suggest? "Travel romance"?

Whatever its problems in execution, I think its weak tracking disclosed that it had genre challenges, as if audiences respond ambivalently to well-known and well-liked actors doing something only vaguely familiar, when audiences wish for the plainly familiar.  I've been trying to think of comps, and finding it difficult.

The Tourist completes the trifecta of floppage, following Killers and Knight & Day. Audiences to Hollywood: Enough! {nm} HarryWarden Dec 11, 00:55

Knight and Day was Fox's top grosser for the year and did over $250 million worldwide {nm} mickpix Dec 11, 01:05

i missed the part which justifies Knight & day's performance as praiseworthy !! naughty Dec 11, 03:13

That RESE4 worldwide number is baffling. 55M from Japan alone. Jelly Dec 11, 04:11

it was 3D. Doesn't that always mean more money for the same amount of viewers? {nm} Lucas73 Dec 11, 04:14

Yeah, but it's still surprising. It's never been a major player here. {nm} Jelly Dec 11, 04:22

Nothing personal, but why are you even on this site if you can't be bothered trading stocks? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Dec 11, 04:15

Here is a MOVIES broad (which allow anyone to discuss anythings about movies) {nm} Peterlee Dec 11, 04:32

True, but there are a lot of boards out there without an associated game if someone just wants to talk movies. shadowking Dec 11, 05:09

Not many online movie boards have many 'insiders' and smart people like here {nm} Peterlee Dec 11, 05:16

Only Difference is this time nobody will point fingers at Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie for it's failure. TheSaint666 Dec 11, 05:15

Studio execs and trades will, so Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie would lower their upfront salaries Peterlee Dec 11, 05:23

The Headlines will probably be more about Bad Reviews and Weak Content than their Star Power. TheSaint666 Dec 11, 05:38

Deadline Headline: "The Tourist Bombs Even with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie" {nm} secretstalker Dec 11, 06:02

The studio compared it to classic films like "To Catch a Thief." Problem is, people nowadays don't really have an interest in that {nm} HarryWarden Dec 11, 12:37

I wouldn't pay $1 to Redbox to watch AJOLI in a mediocre film, I was willing to see Knight and Day and buy DVD because of CDIAZ {nm} TheSureThing Dec 11, 07:31
