JULIE & JULIA
Showtime: 10:25 a.m.
Venue: Krikorian Vista Village Metroplex 15 (North San Diego County, CA)
80 butts / 265 seats (30% full -- what a convenient round number)
Snacks: Just water; had Souplantation right after the movie.
Trailers: Step Father, The Lovely Bones, Amelia, 2012.
Box Office Potential: This area is notorious for catering to senior morning movies, but the figure is still terrific regardless. The attendance was more than double the comparable show for Bride Wars, although that one admittedly skewed younger. While I saw Gran Torino well before it opened wide, I was at this place the morning it did, and the crowd (don't have actual numbers) looked very similar from the outside. I DEFINITELY wouldn't rule a mid-high 20s opening ala GT out, although given the target demo is right at home here, it's hard to tell for sure. Not many girls in attendance--it's still summer here--meaning either they didn't wanna wake up early or crowds could dip off at night.
My Take: Enjoyable fluff, and definitely one of Ephron's better movies. Good as Streep is, I found myself liking the Adams bits more (contrary to critical consensus), which may just be because I'm younger. Doesn't drag much given the 2+ hour runtime, which is surprising given the focused nature of the material (it's almost all about Julia's cookbook, not the TV show). So, yeah, good Hollywood filmmaking -- a rarity in August.
Provided I can keep myself from going to see A Perfect Getaway this evening--pretty certain I'll be able to hold off 'til tomorrow--you should be able to look forward to reviews of this, Beeswax, Captain Abu Raed, Cold Souls, and Paper Heart on Bucket Reviews tonight. Maybe even a video review of this one on the 'ol YouTube Channel. OK, enough pimping.
