There are basically three ways to go with trying to make a buck out of this kind of thing:
1. Put ads everywhere. I have ads on the page, but I've gotten about $122 YTD off of them. That's not enough to justify the workload.
2. Ask for donations. I have done this, too, when I've had a specific project in mind, and I've funneled those dollars into code. But you really don't get that much, and when you do it feels bad.
3. Put the site behind a paywall. This sounds like it could work, but in reality you're talking about a site that gets about a thousand impressions every Tuesday and not much after that. There just aren't enough eyeballs to make it worthwhile, and then you have tax considerations and billing and a whole lot more headaches to deal with, and people are going to share their passwords, you know they are.
